“We must address the elephant in the room – Russia. Soon, Russia will take the floor here alongside other countries to speak about disease prevention and mental health. Yet at the same time, through its war of aggression, Russia is actively undermining people’s health and mental well-being across Europe,” said Minister of Social Affairs Karmen Joller in a sharply worded speech delivered yesterday evening at the United Nations.

According to Joller, Russia’s actions have created an environment where it is nearly impossible for people to maintain mental health or focus on healthy lifestyles.

“Russia bombs hospitals and family medicine centres, schools and kindergartens in Ukraine. It violates the airspace of several EU countries and seeks to undermine the sovereignty, from Georgia and Belarus to Moldova. At the same time, European countries are forced to divert unprecedented resources to defence. Starting next year, Estonia will spend more than 5% of GDP on security. We would much prefer to invest these resources in people’s health and well-being,” Joller stated.

Joller added that Russia’s aggression itself is one of the root causes of many health problems.

“Soon we will also hear a statement from the Russian Federation. Will they speak about mental health and disease prevention? If so, it will be deeply hypocritical. Russia’s aggression is itself a cause of mental health problems. It is one of the reasons why scarce resources hinder improvements to our people’s health. And yet, precisely because we care about our people, we will defend every inch of our land together with our allies,” she underlined.
